WaqWaq Kingdom
Berlin, LeipzigLink to the new single «Hakke Yoi»
Waqwaq in Japanese means as much as enthusiasm, joyful excitement and anticipation. And indeed, the Japanese bass duo WaqWaq Kingdom sounds like an intoxicating promise to escape from everyday life. The psychedelic electronics of musicians Kiki Hitomi and Shige Ishihara aka DJ Scotch Egg is the dazzling and fabulously eccentric work of two artists who are also known for their solo adventures. Their last joint album «Essaka Hoisa», for example, led to style name of its own, the so-called Minyo Footwork. The Berlin-based duo fuses the traditional Japanese Minyo music style with dancehall, footwork, dub, Nintendo sounds and contemporary electronic music. A fusion that Hitomi and Ishihara also accomplish in terms of their costumes and album artwork. The result will be on show at this year’s festival: a downright hypnotic work of art that transcends genres and time, with a live performance that is as energetic as it is danceable. (rm)
