Colonialism – A Musical Oral History Performance

Nairobi, Hamburg

For children and families

What does chocolate have to do with colonialism? How is it that raw materials from Africa are in our phones and laptops? And who was King Leopold II? In their musical oral history performance for children from the age of ten, the Nairobi-based storyteller Wangari Grace and the Hamburg-based percussionist and marimba player Sven Kacirek show how the colonisation of Africa from 1870 to 1970 continues to have an impact on our present.

Their equally informative and gripping narrative follows in the tradition of storytelling, once a popular art form on the African continent, with which experiences and knowledge were passed down through generations. Wangari Grace is an excellent master of this craft. Combining it with dance and music, she knows how to inspire her audiences.

Grace and Kacirek, who wrote and perform the piece together, are convinced that basic knowledge about colonialism is a prerequisite for understanding current political and social debates. They are also aware that the educational system often covers this part of history only in passing – in Europe as well as in Africa. With their engaging lecture performance, the two artists offer an opportunity to raise awareness of our colonial past and present. (rb)
