Border Forensics

From the Sea to the River – Border Violence Across Illegalised Migrants’ Trajectories

Geneva
Border Forensics: Vom Meer bis zum Fluss – Grenzgewalt entlang illegalisierter Migrationswege

Over the last years, investigative practices combining research, art and architecture have allowed to shed new light on human rights violations. Emerging out of the pioneering London-based agency Forensic Architecture and the Forensic Oceanography research project, in 2021 a new investigative agency – Border Forensics – was established in Geneva, focusing specifically on border violence.

Theater Spektakel presents an installation displaying two of the video investigations produced by those agencies. «Liquid Traces – The Left- to-die Boat Case» follows the trajectory of a boat loaded with 72 migrants who attempted to escape from Libya in 2011 but were abandoned in NATO’s surveillance area. «The Death of Blessing Matthew» analyses the conditions that led to the death of a young Nigerian woman, Blessing Matthew, as she was chased by the police across the Alpine border between Italy and France in 2018. Together these investigations, which have supported demands for justice of survivors and families, highlight the violence of borders which follows illegalised migrants’ entire trajectories. (zts)
