Taoufiq Izeddiou
Hmadcha
The World in Trance
Aix-en-Provence, MarrakechInspired by the rituals of the Moroccan Hmadcha brotherhood, this work by choreographer Taoufiq Izeddiou combines tradition and contemporary dance to create a captivating performance. The Sufi community has existed for more than 400 years and its rituals are characterised by music, poetry and rhythm. The aim of their dances is to achieve a collective trance.
The nine male performers in «Hmadcha» translate this mystical-spiritual experience into poetic images and ecstatic moments on stage. They go through the various stages of the trance, which culminates in a collectively experienced, physical and spiritual climax.
Izeddiou is a central figure in Morocco’s contemporary dance scene and pursues his interest in spirituality beyond religion into his artistic work. In «Hmadcha», he addresses themes such as community, vulnerability and resilience, skilfully using precise gestures and the sheer power of dance. In the course of the performance, the initially simple stage set, consisting of a large wall, transforms itself into a dramatic source of light that ingeniously plays with brightness and shadow. The music forms a central element of the piece and underlines its sensual, hypnotic aspect. The result is contemporary dance at its highest level, inviting the audience to surrender to the experience. (am)
