Plastique Fantastique: Liveboat – Chapter 5

A gigantic «Liveboat» is stranded on the festival grounds – an artistic call to attention by the art collective Plastique Fantastique. The group formed in Berlin in 1999 and has since become known for its installations and interdisciplinary collaborations that often challenge the boundaries between public and private space. In their work, they create huge, expansive artworks made from transparent plastic materials, creating entirely new ways of looking at ever-changing environments. Plastique Fantastique has already exhibited in numerous art institutions around the world, including the Venice Biennale in 2019. At the festival, the group presents «LIVEBOAT – Chapter V», a semi-transparent boat sculpture. Inside the installation, an unusual place for encounter opens up to its visitors: Excerpts from Homer’s Odyssey are woven into a soundscape and invite you to listen and exchange.

The project thematically refers to various discussion formats at the festival, such as the Stammtisch, where guests are invited to share their way of looking at borders and migrants in flight. In Talking on Water, sociologist Vanessa E. Thompson talks about new perspectives on state power and its unequal promises of protection. In addition, the «Liveboat» is located in the immediate vicinity of the video installations by the Swiss research collective Border Forensics and is also freely accessible. (as)
