Funchal«Ôss» means «bones» in Creole and here it refers to the delicate framework that supports our bodies. With the title of her performance, Marlene Monteiro Freitas finds a simple yet impressive metaphor for the resilience and fragility of our bodies. For «Ôss», the sought-after and multi-award-winning choreographer has collaborated with the professional and inclusive dance ensemble Dançando com a Diferença under the direction of Henrique Amoedo. Together, they have developed a radical, contemporary dance language – an impressive addition to Freitas’ well-known signature consisting of grotesque and minimalist movements.
The dance piece is characterised by expressive body language, grimacing faces and mechanical movements. Watching it is like zooming in and out, as the audience is taken back and forth from large, loud group scenes to quiet, intimate settings. The dancers of Dançando com a Diferença highlight their physical limitations by dancing not in spite of them, but with them. Their movements always resonate with a quiet yet humorous self-irony about dealing with non-standardised corporealities.
