Sudan Archives
Los AngelesShe taught herself to play the violin because her parents could not afford music lessons. Today, Los Angeles-based musician Betty Brittney Parks, better known as Sudan Archives, is almost inseparable from the violin. In her first album «Athena», she combined unconventional sounds from hiphop, R’n’B, experimental music with hypnotic loops and West African violin music. In her second album, the violin has moved gently into the background: «Natural Brown Prom Queen» is exciting, multi-faceted and lustful and probably contains some of her catchiest and most lush songs to date. This pop project seduces with instrumental diversity and hypnotic beats and is rightly often compared with Beyoncé’s «Renaissance». Sudan Archives sings about «Black Joy», tender relationships, celebrates love, lust and self-confidence. And she constantly returns to questions of feeling at home, which could be connected to the genesis of the album: «Natural Brown Prom Queen» was recorded in her basement studio during lockdown. It is therefore all the more impressive how energetic and lifeaffirming the new music of Sudan Archives is. (rm)
