Mallika Taneja: Do You Know This Song?

Based on a personal experience of loss, the Delhi-based artist Mallika Taneja dives deep into her past. She encounters the voices of women close to her who gave up their careers for the family; voices too faint to be remembered. Their fates may seem individual and personal, but they reflect a systemic obliteration and oppression of patriarchy: when starting a family, women disappear from the public eye and get caught in a vortex of oblivion.

In her online performance «Allegedly» – presented at the 2021 festival and winner of the ZKB Patronage Prize – Taneja gave a voice to Indian women, about consensus and sexualised violence. In her solo performance «Do You Know This Song?», she now attempts to turn the «unheard » voices into music. Equipped with a harmonium and a microphone, Mallika Taneja gently leads us through the world of the women around her. Like faded love stories, the unrealised dreams are sung about and remembered. «Do You Know This Song?» is a touching piece about social invisibility, about grief as a collective practice and about the solace taken from remembrance. Simple words

Mallika Taneja comes from India.

In her play, she remembers a voice she knows.

It is the voice of a woman. But it could also be the voice of many other women.

The point is that not all voices are heard.

And that people remember them.

It is also about grieving together and finding comfort in the memory.

Mallika Taneja is alone on stage and sings.
