They sway their hips, sashay elegantly, wiggle their buttocks, touch each other – mostly scantily dressed, sometimes on high heels and often with their backside exposed. The dancers in «L’homme rare» challenge our ideas of masculine representation on stage as their supposedly «non-masculine» movements unmask our traditional preconceptions.

In «L’homme rare», the Ivorian choreographer and performer Nadia Beugré playfully exposes a complex entanglement of bodies and our reactions to them. She focusses on urban dance styles which reflect gender-specific codes of movements. While the five dancers are mostly shrouded in white cloth and have their backs turned to the audience, they keep drawing our attention to their backsides. With fun, energy and ease, they continuously break out of their roles. How does it feel to watch sparsely dressed or undressed men coquettishly dancing on stage? Full of playfulness and humour, the voyeuristic perspective of «L’homme rare» invites the audience to question any preconceived ideas of masculinity and identity. (am)

Simple words

This dance piece is about the movements of men and women.

But only men dance.

It is a funny dance.

You often see the dancers from behind.

Most of the time they are naked.

The piece looks at prejudices about different bodies.

Choreographer Nadia Beugré questions how we judge bodies in dance.
