Renata Carvalho
Manifesto Transpofágico
São PauloIn «Manifesto Transpofágico», the Brazilian multi-award-winning artist Renata Carvalho negotiates her own body as a travesti*. She builds on a long career as an actress and theatre director and is the founder of the Brazilian trans artists’ movement MONART.
«Manifesto Transpofágico» begins as a hybrid lecture-performance that develops into a direct interchange with the audience. Carvalho enters into an open dialogue about the social construction of gender, about topics such as sexualisation, prevailing stereotypes and structural violence – quite explicitly and courageously using her own exposed body as an example. Carvalho addresses the audience directly and invites them to take part in the conversation – without any prior knowledge or familiarity with any codes and free of shame. This direct and participatory exchange is pleasantly offensive, unique and impressive; Carvalho bluntly answers questions, explains, tells, exchanges and invites to have a look. An interpreter who is also a travesti translates simultaneously, allowing the conversations take place without language barriers. (as)
* The term «travesti» is used in Latin America for people who were assigned male gender at birth but develop a female gender identity.
Simple words
Renata Carvalho is a woman who was born in a man's body.
In her piece, the artist talks about what that means.
And how the people around her react to it.
In the second part, the audience can ask questions.
Everyone can have their say.
You don’t need to know a lot about this to ask questions.
