Piel de Lava
Petróleo
Buenos AiresA trailer in an oil field in cold Patagonia. It serves as a refuge for four workers if the power fails again. Only a few metres away, oil is being drilled. The drill rod penetrates deeper and deeper into the earth, but soon the well is pumped dry. However, everything has changed since the fourth worker recently joined the camp – bringing with him a bag full of high heels, fur coats and glittery costumes.
Piel de Lava is one of the most successful feminist theatre groups in the Argentinean cultural scene. Five women collectively write texts, stage plays and also perform. Their fifth play, «Petróleo», is a humorous examination of a social phenomenon: men in groups. With fake beards and bellies, they discuss food, the strength of their urine flow and fatherhood. But as soon as one of the four workers slips on a pair of high heels, the binary gender image no longer seems to apply. What happens when actresses portray men, who in turn interpret masculinity from various points of view? In hilarious dialogues and with skilful acting, Piel de Lava pierces the machismo of Argentine society while turning the exploitative mechanisms of the commodity industry upside down. (af )
