Marina Herlop
Pripyat
BarcelonaHer instrument is the voice. Marina Herlop fragments, overlays and distorts it without ever forgetting melody and arched phrases. «Pripyat», her latest album released in 2022 on the interdisciplinary Berlin music label PAN, is the first album this Catalan artist produced exclusively with electronic means.
The name of the record is a tribute to the Ukrainian town near the ruins of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, where Europe’s most serious nuclear disaster to date occurred 37 years ago. Since then, the abandoned city has developed a wondrous life of its own – just like Herlop’s voice in the songs of «Pripyat». Her vocalisations flicker in rhythmic polyphony like an aural kaleidoscope. She draws from the musical traditions of South India, mixing them with electronic sounds. Her classical training can still be sensed in the adept composition of the album’s seven tracks, but her music has long since freed itself from formal boundaries and sets off into wondrous sonic spheres.
