Juan Onofri Barbato & Elisa Carricajo
Vendo Humo
Buenos AiresHow does it feel to be an artist in times of hyperinflation? «Vendo Humo» literally translates as «I sell smoke», which in Argentina means: «I’m fooling you». Argentine performance artist and activist Juan Onofri Barbato uses this idiom as the title of his latest work. In his literary solo performance, created in collaboration with theatre maker Elisa Carricajo, the stage is enveloped in clouds of smoke – epitomising the volatility of money. In Argentina, the value of money can change drastically from one day to the next as the country continues to experience inflationary crises, currently at an alarming rate. On stage, Onofri Barbato talks about how galloping inflation not only determines his life as an artist, but also shapes his family, his relationships and decisions. He asks what it actually means to say «I am an artist» in Argentina. With «Vendo Humo», Onofri Barbato and Carricajo have created a moving piece about the life of freelance artists grappling with an uncertain financial reality. In many scenic moments, Onofri Barbato succeeds in creating a light and entertaining atmosphere while still addressing the thin ice between art and money. (se)
